Mapplethorpe Piss Christ

Piss Christ is a photograph from 1987 by Andres Serrano. It shows a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's own urine. The photograph was one of a series of photographs that Serrano had made that involved classical statuettes submerged in various fluids (like blood, milk, and obviously, urine). Without a given explanation, the viewer would not necessarily be able to tell the difference between urine or another similar medium, like amber.

Serrano said that the work itself is not intended to denounce religion. It alludes to the commercialization and cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary culture.
