Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is the best-known chapel in the Apostolic Palace (the residence of the Pope). It is famous for its architecture and is decoration. It has been frescoed throughout by the greatest artists of the Renaissance artists: Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and Sandro Botticelli. Michelangelo painted 12,000 square feet of the chapel ceiling between 1508 and 1512. He resented the commission, believing his work only served the Pope's need for grandeur. Today the ceiling is widely believed to be Michelangelo's crowing achievement in painting.
