Pieta

Pieta is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by the artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. It is housed in St. Peter's Basilic. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the arits. It was commissioned by a French cardinal who was a representative in Rome. The work depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of Mary after the crucifixtion. Michelangelo's intepretation is unique. It is an important work because it balances Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism.
