Michelangelo David

David is the masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. It was created between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian artist Michelangelo. It is 17 feet tall and made of marble. The statue represents the biblical hero David. Michelangelo's David is different from other representations of David because it is not depicted with the head of the slain Goliath. According to some, he is depicted before his battle with Goliath. He looks tense and ready for combat. There is the feeling that he is in motion (the contropposto stance, the bulging veins). Others view the depiction to represent the moment immediately after battle, as David serenely contemplates his victory.
