Donatello David

Donatello was commissioned to make a statue of David twice in his career. The story comes from the Old Testament (we're reading it right now in third year core, how humanitarian of us!). The marble David was first commissioned to carve a statue of David in 1408. The commission came from the person in charge of the cathedral of Florence. This was Donatello's first important commission. David's face is curiously blank and seems unaware of the giant head at his feet.
Donatello's bronze statue of David was created in 1440s. It notable because it was the first unsupported standing work in bronze cast during the Renaissance and the first freestanding nude male figure made since antiquity. This David is actually smiling and has his foot on Goliath's severed head. The youth of David can also be seen in bronze David.
