The Elevation of the Cross is a triptych painting by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. It was complete in 1610-11. He painted it after returning to Flanders from Italy. The work shows a clear impression from the Italian Renaissance and Baroque artists like Michelangelo. The middle panel (shown in the image to the left) show the tension between the multitude of finely muscled men trying to lift the cross and the almost unbearable wright of Christ.
