It was commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BCE to honor the triumphal return of Augustus from Hispania and Gaul. It was consecrated in 9 BCE by the Seante to celebrate the peace established in the Empire by Augustus. The altar was meant to be a vision of the Roman civil religion.
