The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine located in Jerusalem. The rock is known as the Foundation Stone. The significance of the site stems from the religious beliefs revolving the rock. The Dome of the Rock was complete around 691 CE. The Dome of the Rock was intended to compete with the other fine buildings of worship of other religions in the city. The dome, although at that time foreign to Islam, attempted to rival the many domes of Christian churches in the city. The structure of the building itself is octagonal.
