Sainte-Chapelle

La Sainte-Chapelle, The Holy Chapel, is a Gothic chapel in the heart of Paris, France. It is regarded as the high point of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture. The Rayonnant style achieved a sense of weightlessness. The Chapel was sponsored by King Louis IX and was completed in 1248. It was designed with the Hagia Sophia in mind. Just as the Emperor could pass privately from his palace into the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, so now could Louis pass directly from his palace into the Sainte-Chapelle.
