Olympia is an oil on canvas painting my Edouard Manet. This painting was completed in 1863 and is clearly another Venus. While The Luncheon on the Grass sparked controversy, Olympia created even more conversation when it was first exhibited to the public in 1865. Conservatives condemned the work as "immoral." Others, of course, were big fans of the painting, claiming that it is a "masterpiece."
"When other artists correct nature by painting Venus they lie. Manet asked himself why he should lie. Why not tell the truth?" Emile Zola
