Manet Luncheon on the Grass

Le dejeuner sur l'herbe, or The Luncheon on the Grass, was completed in 1863 by Edouard Manet. It immediately sparked controversy because of the juxtaposition between the nude female and the completely dressed men. It is not a realist painting, but a statement in favor of the artist's individual freedom. It is an affront to the propriety of the time.
