Helen Frankenthaler is an American abstract expressionist painter. She was born in 1928. She is a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. This painting is HUGE! It measures seven feet by ten feet. It also looks like it is a water color even though it is painted with oils. In Mountains and Sea, Frankenthaler introduced the technique of painting directly onto an unprepared canvas so that the material absorbs the colors.
