Franz Marc was part of the Early Modern art movement in the early 20th century. Marc was born in Munich, Germany in 1880. Franz considered studying theology but settled on studying painting at the Art Academy in Munich. During this time he also traveled throughout Europe meeting important artists of the day. The horses in Large Blue Horses are painted in monochromatic blue and the landscapes of bright, flat colors creating a natural spiritual mood.
